Welcome to the Friends of Bethel Nursery School Website
Four years ago in 2006 a group of six UK friends decided to help another friend, Sarah King's dream come true. It was agreed that this wouldn’t be easy as Sarah’s dream was a purpose built nursery school in Banjul, The Gambia where she was Head. We’d been visiting Sarah over the years and helped the school and local community in a number of small ways. We knew that Sarah and the Building Committee in The Gambia had been fundraising for a long time and that they’d bought the land and had an architect draw up the plans. We’d seen the land and we’d seen the plans and we’d also seen how committed everyone was to making this dream happen. All they needed now was help to raise the money to build the nursery. And so, the charity Friends of Bethel Nursery School came about. Tremendous progress has been made since the foundation stone was laid in March 2007 and we are very grateful to all the people and organisations that have given financial support. Please help us to finish the building work.
The website explains the aims of the charity, the project and has the latest news and developments. We hope you enjoy looking through it. Margaret Messer, Chair of Trustees |

Latest News Building Progress September 2010 The rains in The Gambia have been very heavy recently with some terrific winds. However the roof is now complete with the corrugated sheeting fitted. Extra ironwork trusses were required to complete the span across the roof and these have been engineered and erected. The boundary wall surrounding the nursery has been completed making the site more secure both during the building work and more importantly, when the school is finished and occupied. We have received the photos kindly taken by Ian Ashton from the York City Partnership who secured the Gambian Olympic team to use York as their training base for 2012. He has just returned from a visit and meeting with the Gambian Olympic committee in Banjul and included a visit to Bethel to view the school progress. As you see the progress is excellent and it is thanks to all of you who have supported the school building project.

A Message from Sarah King, Head Teacher
Dear Friends,
Bethel Nursery School is very dear to my heart and it gladdens me to know that so many people wish us well.
A new nursery school has been our dream for more than 10 years. Individual classrooms will help the children to concentrate and learn more. The teachers try very hard to give the children the best start to their education. If you can help us to build the new nursery, then the Children thank you, the Teachers thank you, the Building Committee thank you, and I thank you. Please learn more about Bethel Nursery and take the time to read this web-site and support us in our “buy-a-brick” campaign.
Thank you. Sarah King, |
